assistants as a matter of course.
We appreciate that it is customary within heavyweight City firms to pass
day-to-day case-handling to assistants. Such firms often use the selling point
that assistants have a lower hourly charge-out rate, thus a lower overall bill.
However we find it more common that the increase of time written by the
assistant often out-weights the benefit of the lower charge-out rate, particularly
in matters involving complex legal issues or urgent fire-fighting where the
inexperienced assistant incurs multiples of time over that which would be
charged by a partner.
